Ernest Volkman (born December 31, 1940 in Huntington, New York) is an American author, investigative reporter and journalist who is considered an expert on the subject of war epionage, and the criminal underworld. Volkman, a 1959 graduate of Whitman High School in his hometown of Huntington, attended Hofstra University and gradauated with a B.A. degree in Journalism in 1963.

CareerEdit

After graduation from Hofstra University, Ernest joined Newsday, the Long Island, NY based daily newspaper, as a full-time reporter, beginning a 13-year career that included stints as an editorial writer, copy editor, and national editor. In his spare time he wrote freelance articles for markets ranging from The New York Times to Omni magazine. Volkman has lectured on intelligence at various universities and government agencies, has also served as a consultant for several foreign produced documentaries dealing with espionage, including those done by ITV and BBC in Great Britain, and he has appeared on various American news programs including ABC's Nightline CNBC's Mob Money, and NBC's Today Show in addition to appearances and contributing comments on the A&E Network's Mobsters and Notorious programs, which has covered stories on numerous noted American Mafia and underworld crime figures, from Al Capone, Frank Costello to Tony Accardo, Boston area mob figure Whitey Bulger, and noted Harlem heroin dealer/mobster Frank Lucas.

In 1976, Ernest left daily journalism to become a freelance writer. Over the next two decades, he wrote 11 nonfiction books and several hundred magazine articles, many of them dealing with organized crime and espionage. His most recent titles include Spies (Wiley) and Espionage (Wiley). Gangbusters was released by Faber in 1998.[1]

Present lifeEdit

Volkman and wife Beverly have two adult children, son Eric (born December 6, 1969) and daughter Michelle (born September 14, 1975).Ernest currently shuffles time between residences in his hometown of Huntington, New York, and he and wife Beverly's main residence in Agawam, Massachusetts, and New York City.
