Mari

Frank Mari

Frank "Russo" Mari (disappeared September 18, 1968) was a high ranking member of the Bonanno crime family during the 1960s.

Biography Edit

Mari was born in Italy of Calabrian blood. Mari was a close friend of "Little Angie" Tuminaro, the linchpin in the famous 'French Connection' case. "Frank T", as Mari was also called, was reportedly inducted into the Bonanno crime family in 1956, in a ceremony conducted at a house in Elizabeth, New Jersey. At the age of 30, he made his bones. His sponsor, the man who would vouch for him, was Carmine Galante.

Mari was one of the last men inducted into La Cosa Nostra before the Commission, ordered the books to be closed. That day, in the basement of the house, watched over by Thomas Lucchese, Albert Anastasia, Ruggiero Boiardo, Carmine Galante and others, the induction ceremony was performed. Galante insisted, according to a news report by Nicolas Pileggi, that Mari become part of his crew. He knew a good earner when he saw one, and Mari had a taste for the drug business, dealing through Tuminaro and Anthony DiPasqua.

Mari became a rising star in the Bonanno family and fellow mobster, Michael Adamo acted as his bodyguard. During the "Bananas War" of the 1960s, Mari and Adamo were loyal to a faction led by Gaspare DiGregorio. Mari was rumored to have been one of the shooters in the March, 1968 killing of Samuel Perrone, one of Salvatore Bonanno's bodyguards, in Brooklyn. Mari was once identified by the U.S. Senate as being involved in narcotics trafficking, illegal gambling and loansharking.

Death Edit

When Paul Sciacca became the boss of the Bonanno family, Mari was elevated to underboss and his loyal companion, Mike Adamo to consigliere. Soon after, on September 18, 1968, both Mari and Adamo disappeared, never to be seen or heard from again. They were last sighted at the 19th Hole Bar and Grill on 86th Street in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn.

It is rumored that Mari and Adamo were plotting to remove boss Paul Sciacca from power so that they could take over the crime family, but their plans were revealed and they were eliminated. Phillip Rastelli, a former soldier under Mari who was promoted to capo of Mari's old crew, was suspected in the killings as soon after the double murder-disappearance he was elevated to consigliere by Sciacca and Natale Evola to underboss.
